Major Security Issue Affecting Microsoft Windows Users: KB2267602 Defender Update Causing Loss of Application Shortcuts

COMNEXIA is aware of a major security issue that is affecting users of the Microsoft Windows operating system. The issue is caused by the latest Defender update, KB2267602, and results in users being unable to access application shortcuts on the Start menu and taskbar.

According to reports, after installing KB2267602 version 1.381.2140.0 on a device, the application shortcuts on the Start menu and taskbar are automatically deleted. This issue is also caused by Attack Surface Reduction rules.

Microsoft has acknowledged this issue by logging an incident ticket (MO497128) and is currently working on a fix. Our team of engineers is also actively investigating and providing support to affected users.

If you have installed the KB2267602 update on your device and are experiencing the issue, we recommend the following:

  • Visit the Microsoft 365 admin center health dashboard and select Service Health. Select the Service – Microsoft 365 Suite and here you can track all the details about this issue.
  • If you wish to get updates about the MO497128 incident, you can select the option to customize and configure email.
  • As a temporary workaround, some users have reported success by setting the ASR Rule to audit in Intune.
