Tech Tip - Local networks that use .com in their domain name

Roswell, GA (October 26, 2005) --- When Windows 2000 Active directory first came out many people used .com in their local domain name. Then names like .local, and .lan, were quickly used so that the naming convention didn't clash with real DNS records on the Internet. For example, if your public domain name is your ISP must enter DNS records to tell people in the outside world how to get to your web page, email server, ftp site, vpn records, etc.

Today Active Directory is integrated with Windows DNS server. Since this is now true, if you use as your local domain, every time your public DNS records change at the ISP you must in turn change your local DNS records as well. Some times an ISP will change your public DNS records without even bothering to tell you that those records have changed. As an example, it could be weeks before someone in your office notices that you are looking at a different web page in the office from what the rest of the world is seeing.

Public / Private DNS versus Public / Local Domain names can get even trickier when building domain trust or high level AD task. If a domain trust needs to be built and .com is used in the domain name the networks will have DNS resolution issues when trying to determine IP addresses between the public and private DNS records.

In short; plan for the future when naming your local domain name. Use a name other than .com, .net, .org or any other publicly available naming convention. This will eliminate DNS clashes and allow you ultimate domain expandability.
